Not even small towns are safe from the scourge of black crime and drugs. Marcus Antonio Curry (March 21, 2010) of Surgoinsville, Tennessee was arrested for firing shots into a crowded park in Rogersville, Tennessee. Police claim this was over a drug dispute with another man.

Curry had left and later came back to the park and unloaded six shots from his vehicle into a crowd of people. Thank God nobody was hurt. The rest is from the Kingsport Times-News.

ROGERSVILLE - A Surgoinsville man accused of emptying a six-shot revolver into a crowded Rogersville park Saturday evening was arrested at a family barbecue a few blocks away within an hour of the shooting. No injuries were reported, and the suspect, Marcus Antonio Curry, was charged with attempted first-degree murder.

Witnesses reportedly told the Rogersville Police Department that Curry, 27, 185 Bass Lane, Surgoinsville, had been in a dispute with a male at Swift Park off Hasson Street on Saturday afternoon.

RPD Detective Charlie Gibson said the dispute allegedly involved drugs and money. Gibson added that the incident is still under investigation and he couldn't release specific details about the dispute as of Sunday afternoon.

Following the dispute, Curry allegedly drove to his residence to retrieve a handgun, and then returned to the park shortly before 6 p.m. Police were dispatched to a shooting at Swift Park at 5:59 p.m. Saturday.

Witnesses reportedly told police that Curry was driving a blue or grey Chrysler. He allegedly stopped his vehicle in the middle of Hasson Street and fired six shots at the male target who was playing basketball with another male at the park.

Gibson said Curry was about 100 feet from his intended victim and all the shots missed their target. Curry then fled in his vehicle.

"The park was full of kids and people just mingling around," Gibson said. "And then on the other side there was a birthday party going on at Price Public School and a lot of people were around for that. He (Curry) said he was specifically after that one boy, and luckily no one was hit by a stray bullet."

Gibson said that after the shooting Curry went to a family member's residence on Armstrong Street in Rogersville where a party and barbecue was taking place. The party was interrupted as police apprehended Curry inside the residence without incident about 49 minutes after the shooting.

An empty .22-caliber revolver was allegedly found in an out building at the Armstrong Street residence. As of Sunday, police hadn't recovered any spent shell casings.

Witnesses reportedly identified the weapon as the one used in the shooting. Aside from attempted first-degree murder, Curry was also charged with possession of a handgun by a convicted felon. He was being held in the Hawkins County Jail on Sunday without bond pending arraignment Monday in Hawkins County Sessions Court.
