Altercation leads to murder in Damascus

An altercation in the early morning hours of June 2, 2013, has led to the death of one individual and another individual being charged with murder.

According to Washington County Sheriff Fred Newman, a call came in to Washington County Central Dispatch at approximately 12:15 am in regards to a stabbing. Deputies from the Washington County Virginia Sheriff's Office, along with Damascus Police, responded to a location in the 300 building of Settlers Point Apartments, Damascus, VA.

Upon arrival, law enforcement personnel found the victim, Chester William Brown, age 47, of Settlers Point Apartments, Damascus, VA, had suffered stab wounds to the head and upper body. The victim was pronounced dead at the scene.

David Allen Widener, age 38, also of Settlers Point Apartments, Damascus, VA, has been charged with second degree murder. He is currently being held without bond in the Southwest Virginia Regional Jail in Abingdon. Widener has also been charged with felonious assault as the result of assaulting a Washington County Sheriff's Deputy during the course of the investigation.

"Our investigation has revealed there had been an ongoing dispute between the two during the course of the day and night leading up to the incident," stated Sheriff Newman. The use of alcohol, also, appears to be involved in the altercation.
