Wise County Man Sentenced to 210 Months
for Oxycontin Trafficking
ABINGDON, VIRGINIA -- United States Attorney Timothy J. Heaphy announced today that Stephen Riggs, 36, of Big Stone Gap, Va. was sentenced in the United States District Court for the Western District of Virginia in Abingdon to serve more than seventeen years in prison for his involvement in drug distribution in Southwest Virginia.
Today in District Court, Riggs was ordered to serve 210 months imprisonment, serve six years supervised release and ordered to pay a $1,000.00 fine for his conviction for conspiracy to distribute Oxycodone. Riggs" conviction resulted from a two year cooperative investigation by the Lee County, Virginia Sheriff"s Office, Virginia State Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives (ATF), and the United States Marshals Service.
According to evidence presented at hearings by Assistant United States Attorney Zachary T. Lee, Stephen Riggs was involved with numerous individuals in obtaining OxyContin in Florida and then transporting the Oxycontin to Lee County and Wise County, Virginia for distribution. According to evidence uncovered during the investigation, much of the supply of OxyContin being sold by these individuals was from prescriptions obtained from doctors at pain clinics in Florida. Further evidence demonstrated that Riggs was responsible for organizing these trips and directing individuals on the means of fraudulently obtaining the prescriptions.
The investigation of these cases were conducted by the Lee County, Virginia Sheriff's Office, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives, Virginia State Police, and the United States Marshals Service. Assistant United States Attorney Zachary T. Lee of the United States Attorney's Office in Abingdon prosecuted the case.
